Shame on you, now - count the letters - it's thighs! Well, it depends on who you are. For my nine year old, in some places the white is up to her WAIST! Yup, and that’s just the natural snow. The schools are closed today, and might have been yesterday had it not been Sunday. People who live off the beaten path up here either have big 4WD’s or they are home catching up on Oprah (although the main roads are open for business).
Having had a number of false starts in recent years, it’s hard to think that this is, for sure, one of those classic winters like in the “olden” days when I was nine . . . but this one does feel like it’s for real.
On top of - or should I say underneath - the natural fluffy coming down in truckloads we have unprecedented amounts of man-made snow being laid down. Boyne Mountain invested over $400,000 in snowmaking equipment and infrastructure over the summer in order to be able to take advantage of exactly this current situation - many consecutive days of low nighttime temps. The new booster pumps and larger pipes allow twice as much snow to be made now. I don’t exactly understand how it works - but why do I care how it works - the result is that we are perhaps a month ahead of last year in terms of the amount terrain with skiable coverage, and the quality of the surface on the open runs is midwinter good. That is easy to understand.
