Right As Rain

Snowsports enthusiasts tend to be pretty bi-polar when it comes to weather changes. (And let me tell you, resort operators are even more "sensitive" to the vagaries of the weather patterns.)

Let me be a voice of reason in light of the weather blip that has just rolled throuh.  RELAX! A temporary warm spell in Michigan is just that.  Temporary.  It is also important to note that the scenarios that affect snow in BOYNE country are markedly different than those just an hour's drive south of us. Often times while southern Michiganians are looking to build arks their neighbors to the North are digging out.

Here's a link to Accuweather.  You will see two days of classic early spring-like conditions (daytime temps above freezing with evening temps well below freezing.) The slopes of BOYNE have plenty of snow to spare and by midweek the winter snow machine looks to be back in full swing further fortifiying our embarrasment of snowy riches.  Stay the course and get out on the hill.  You'll be glad you did.

I skied Boyne Highlands yesterday (up until the late afternoon shower we got) and enjoyed some of the best snow I've skied on this season. So I was just about to post a column that said the same thing as JJ - and to a scary extent, in many of the same words. So, I guess instead I'll just say, "Yeah, what HE said!" Hey, I understand all this warm weather all the sudden, I have lived in MI my whole life. What I don't understand is why they don't just say forget the halfpipe at boyne mountain, just make a bunch of huge hits. There are basically NO jumps to hit at either mountain. That is horrible. Halfpipes are fun, but jumps are funner. A huge superpipe would be nice, but not at the cost of NO jumps. I say they forget the pipe at boyne mountain and use all that snow and terrain to build a few huge kickers, maybe a huge gap, a couple table tops, a hip-jump. It is mid-jan. and it seems like the pipe effort is a waist of time. I have gotten passes at Crystal mountain in the past and thought i was stepping it up going to boyne, but with no jumps it is ridiculous. Make a jump, a HUGE jump
