Ski Racing

BOYNE Racing

BOYNE Racing is geared toward athletes who wish to take their alpine ski racing to the next level, with a focus on USSA and FIS racers, along with middle and high school racers wishing to improve their ski racing ability. The winter season program offers training sessions at both Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands, generally scheduled Wednesday through Sunday. We offer selected intensive two-session-per-day race camps - at Sunday River, ME during Thanksgiving week, along with two Holiday Camps in late December in Michigan. In addition, we can provide private team training sessions and camps with sufficient advance notice.

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Our mission is to provide instruction, training, and mentorship for ski racers to achieve success in ski racing by way of a high quality program that teaches sound technique, tactics, training habits, and mental preparation. We believe that, armed with an open mind and learning attitude, all racers have great potential for improving their racing ability and results. Taking up this challenge provides the athlete with many positive benefits not directly related to race results; including self-confidence, good critical thinking, self-discipline, camaraderie, and pride of accomplishment. But perhaps the most important benefit to be earned is fun – and we believe that fun is an indispensable ingredient in the learning process.

BOYNE Racing Staff

We have a staff of highly accomplished ski racers who have achieved success at regional, national, World Cup, and Olympic levels – both in competition and in coaching. Collectively, our five core staff members have over one hundred years of high-level experience in the sport of ski racing. Our goal is to pass along our experience and knowledge so that you have the opportunity to match or exceed our successes. Our staff’s experience as successful competitors sets our program apart!

STAFF BIOS

BOYNE Racing’s core coaching staff live and breathe ski racing. All members of our staff have years of coaching experience at various levels, including club, high school, national-level races, and at many off-season ski racing camps in Colorado, Montana, and at Mt. Hood in Oregon. To go along with our experience in racing and coaching, each of our staff has one other very important quality – a learning attitude. We believe that our expertise has been attained because of our willingness to learn – and that, because ski racing is a complex and ever-changing sport, we must always maintain an open mind. We believe that, as coaches, we must have the same humility and learning attitude that we ask of our racers.

CARY ADGATE
Program Director/Coach

Michigan’s most accomplished ski racer skied at the international level for eighteen years, earning six U.S. National Championship titles, five top-five World Cup finishes, and the best U.S. finish, a 13th place, in slalom during one of his two Olympic appearances.
Cary has fully embraced changes in the sport and has once again raced at high levels in recent seasons.
"It’s not possible to overstate the importance of having the proper approach to learning and training for a young ski racer. If you get it right, the sky is the limit for long-term results."

BENJAMIN CROCKETT
Head Coach

Ben has competed in NorAm Cups, National Championships, and FIS races across the country. He has consistently been a top finisher in the MidAm Series and is always one of the fastest skiers in Michigan.
A Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Science provides Ben with an objective vision of the bio mechanical and physiological basis for performance in winter sport. He recently presented research at the International Congress for Science in Skiing in Austria.
Ben says, "You can improve quickly in ski racing if you are always willing to try something new."

GARY MILLER
BOYNE Flyers Director/Coach

Gary is a Midwest native who has enjoyed phenomenal success as both a racer and coach. He was a U.S. Ski Team coach for six years. He coached racers who became World and Olympic Champions.
As a racer, Gary has won over 80 ski races, including a Central Division Championship and was a member of two NCAA Championship teams at the University of Colorado.
"Athletes need to focus on quality and consistency in training. This is where you build the confidence that you will need on race day."

JENNIFER CROCKETT
Coach

Jennifer has won more FIS slalom races than any other American woman in history. She has competed successfully in U.S. Nationals and NorAm Finals. Members of the U.S. Ski Team are never safe when she competes at MidAm Championships.
Northern Michigan University offered Jennifer a full NCAA Skiing scholarship; she studied physical education and health.
"Focus on improving in practice. The speed in races will take care of itself."

CHRISTOPHER HERRMANN
Coach

For the last decade, Christopher has been refining his skiing and coaching to a high level. As a natural teacher, he is willing to devote an amazing amount of energy to helping others learn what he has learned. He has raced in FIS, USSA and collegiate events across the nation.
Christopher is a public school educator in Northern Michigan and is pursuing a Master’s Degree.
Christopher says, "Because we race, we know what our athletes are going through on the hill. We know how to help them improve."

ERIC LUNDTEIGEN
Coach

Erik has spent many years teaching young children professionally, and it shows in his coaching. He is an accomplished racer, and an experienced certified USSA coach. He has coached three individual athletes to high school state championship titles.
Erik is one of the best course setters in Michigan and serves regularly as a USSA race official.
"To be successful, young athletes need to learn to balance school, practice and racing. We can help!"
