We all strive to shoot a lower score than our round prior, but when improvement seems out of reach, where do you turn? I look to the golf gurus at the BOYNE Golf Academy to help me dial my game up to the next level.
Jim Flick was admired as one of the top five golf instructors in the world, and he referred to BOYNE as his summer home acting as the former Dean of Instruction. Flick mentored Brian O'Neill, current Director of Golf Instruction, and shared his passion for teaching the game of golf. Carrying the ideals shared in those years of mentorship and combining them with some of the latest technology available today, O'Neill thought up and created the BOYNE Golf Academy, "designed to help every player, of every ability level".
Led by nationally recognized PGA professionals, BOYNE Golf Academy's mission is to help golfers improve every aspect of their game. Brian O'Neill is recognized by Golf Digest as one of the "Top Ten Teachers in Michigan" and a winner of three Michigan PGA Junior Golf Leader awards for his work with some of the highest ranked junior golfers in the state. Brian is an accomplished player as well. In 2000, he captured his first Michigan PGA major with a win at the Michigan PGA State Pro-Am at Boyne Highlands Resort.
Mike Fay, Director of Player Performance, has joined the BOYNE Golf Academy with over 20 years of teaching experience. Mike recently was listed as one of the "Top 50 Kids Teachers" in the world by Kids Golf. Fay is also quite an accomplished player having set a course record with a 63 in the Michigan PGA Championship in 2001. Fay also achieved victories in the 2003 Difeo Lexus Shootout and the 2004 Ricoh Clambake Pro-Am in New Jersey.
Barry Redmond, Senior Teaching Professional with the academy is recognized by Golf Digest as one of the "Top Teachers" in the state. As a player, Barry is a two-time champion of the Michigan PGA Championship, a Michigan Open Champion, and has competed on the PGA Tour (PGA Championship), the Nationwide Tour and most recently, competed in the 2014 PGA National Sr. Club Pro Championship.
When our pros broke down their ideas about a holistic approach to the game of golf, they dreamt up the BOYNE Golf Performance Experience. The intent of the program is to "offer golfing clients an experience very similar to that of the top PGA tour players." The program is built on three pillars, consisting of: proper Equipment, Fitness, and Technique.
By running the golfer through GEARS, the number one club and body tracking system on the market, our instructors are able to see every minute detail associated with the motion of the swing. Instructors may recommend a different shaft or loft angle based on the information provided by the software.
After ensuring that the equipment is optimal for the individual golfers swing, they are run through a fitness analysis- "no, we will not ask you to run five miles" O'Neill said with a laugh. "Instead we will assess your flexibility through the swing motion and recommend stretches and exercises to improve trouble spots."
Once we have addressed each of the easily adjusted variables, focus returns to the unison of body and club throughout the motion of the swing. Harnessing 26 strategically placed sensors and multiple high-speed cameras used by the GEARS program, golfers fine-tune their motion before heading out on the course with instructors.
Offered as a one or two day program, enjoy being treated like a PGA Tour professional while playing at a premier golf resort in Northern Michigan. That's not all! We have several excellent programs focused on short game, youth play, and ladies golf! Stay tuned to our blog as we go in depth on some of our other programs offered by the BOYNE Golf Academy!
