Seeing the Sights on a Segway

One way to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Boyne Highlands is by going on a Segway Tour. Unlike typical Segway tours that may take you down paved paths through towns or around a city, we do them the northern Michigan way, adventuring through the trees. I was fortunate to go on my first Segway Tour with Pam, James and Brooks Willoughby-Ray of Greensboro, North Carolina, and we had a great time!

Some might be a little tentative about riding a Segway but really it's quite easy. The process starts with a short training video going over the different controls and how the Segway works. Next, our Segway Tour Guide, Lex Anderson, took us out to begin a quick training session on the actual machines. Anderson directed us through a variety of drills to allow us to be more comfortable on the Segway's before heading to the trails. Pam, Brooks, James and I easily weaved through the cone course, and had great control going up and down the trial hill; we were ready for the real deal!

The first trail option is a picturesque path that leads to the top of North Peak. This option has a variety of trails that lead the way. First we follow the paved main road to the trail head where we enter a narrow path through the trees. After passing through the short narrow trails, they begin to open to wider trails allowing you to cruise through the trees and take in the beautiful nature. The top of North Peak is a wonderful place to stop and take a moment to overlook the greenery of Pleasant Valley. On clear days, like the one of our adventure, you are able to see the towers of the Mackinac Bridge standing tall in the distance.

The second trail option is one of more technical terrain of tight turns weaving through the hardwoods. This trail is equally beautiful, as you're emerged in the tall pines that sway in the breeze from the nearby bay. The shorter, even ground path offers excitement through twists and turns adding a little thrill to your riding. This was the favorite of our group as you heard the laughter and playful, "woos," that echoed through the trees as we maneuvered through the pathway.

As we made our way back there was nothing but smiles from the group. Boyne Highlands' Segway Tours are definitely something you make your own whether you want a relaxing cruise through the woods to take in a gorgeous view or a thrilling, twisting adventure through the trees. The wonderful tour guides, like Lex Anderson, are great at tailoring the experience to fit the needs of ourguests. When you visit Boyne Highlands this summer, I recommend the Segway Tours as a must do!

Until next time,

Makenzie
