Michigan Fly Fishing Festival Comes to Boyne Mountain, July 20-21

BOYNE FALLS, Mich. - Boyne Outfitters at Boyne Mountain is hosting the first annual Michigan Fly Fishing Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21.  The festival brings over 20 fly fishing manufacturers to Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls, as well as offers complimentary casting clinics and guest speakers, a fly fishing challenge, casting competitions, a barbeque and live music.

Festival goers can browse gear and talk with representatives from over 20 premier fly fishing manufacturers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  The vendors will be set up in the day skier lot near the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa and feature rods, reels, flies, clothing, art, tools, and much more.  Complimentary casting clinics at the pond are available throughout the festival on both Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, guests can also enjoy lunch from Tannery Creek Meat Market and the sounds of Hipps n' Ricco from noon to 3 p.m.

The festival's Tip of the Mitt On The Fly Challenge kicks off at noon.  This 24-hour fishing competition is $25 to participate and the angler that catches the largest fish in northern Michigan by noon on Sunday takes home a Redington Link 590-4 Rod valued at $350.  The competition is catch and release.  Registration takes place at Boyne Outfitters at Boyne Mountain.  For more information, please call 231.549.6064.

Round one of the Casting for Conservation competition takes place on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa pond.  The competition is $10 per person with half of the money raised being donated to the Miller-Van Winkle Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and the other half going to the top three competition placements.  The final round of Casting for Conservation takes place on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Michigan Fly Fishing Festival also offers free guest speaker sessions.  On Saturday at 4 p.m., Ethan Winchester, head guide for Boyne Outfitters, shares information about fly fishing in Michigan's Tip of the Mitt.  At 5 p.m., Glen Blackwood of Great Lakes Fly Fishing Company leads a discussion on fly casting fundamentals for fiberglass and bamboo rods.  On Sunday, Blackwood returns at 2 p.m. for "The Angling Writings of Robert Traver."

Sunday also features a Trout Pond Single Fly Competition from noon to 1 p.m. at the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa pond.  The most inches caught in one hour from a single fly wins a Redington Form Game Rod.  Entry is $5.

The Michigan Fly Fishing Festival is sponsored by Sage Fly Fishing, Rio Products, Redington, Buff Headwear, Umpqua Feather Merchants, Keough Hackles, and Miller-Van Winkle Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
