Gobble, gobble, Thanksgiving is almost here and that means one thing, so is ski season! This year, after you finish carving the turkey, you can carve runs at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls. The resort is opening three runs - Hemlock, Pierson, and Victor - and spinning the Hemlock chairlift this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 28 and 29, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lift tickets are $25 for most ages and equipment rental is available.
The resort started making snow with its proprietary Boyne Low-E fan guns on Friday, Nov. 20, and continued through most of last weekend and into Monday. That gave Boyne Mountain only about 40 hours of snowmaking when it typically takes about 72 hours to open slopes. The feat was accomplished thanks to the passion and dedication of the snowmaking crew, and also an enhancement to the Boyne Low-E fan gun that further increases efficiency with a new nozzle design. The technology was rolled out this season on the Hemlock trail.
"I'm thankful for our snow guns!" said Ed Grice, president and general manager of Boyne Mountain Resort, with a laugh. "It was certainly a challenge this year as our region didn't receive as much natural snowfall as other areas, but we had some good snowmaking temperatures and this is the reason we invest significantly in our snowmaking operations; to lend Mother Nature a hand, and get the season started!"
The resort plans to close the slopes after Sunday to resume snowmaking with plans to reopen for the season on Friday, Dec. 4, with expanded terrain.
For the 2015/16 season, Boyne Mountain is offering a new First Class Lesson Program, additional lift hours for the Ramshead chairlift, expanded fat tire snow biking trail, and new rental equipment. The resort also recently won two nationally acclaimed awards for its terrain being named the No. 1 ski resort in the Midwest for freeskiing by Freeskier magazine and the No. 1 terrain parks in the Midwest by Transworld Snowboarding.
