Boyne Mountain is pleased to welcome 2014 Olympic bronze medalist and three-time Winter X Games gold medalist, Nick Goepper, as this year's guest speaker at the 8th annual Skitoberfest celebration, Saturday, Oct. 1. Goepper takes the stage at the Winter Expo at 1 p.m. and will sign autographs and judge the on-snow rail jam.
Goepper is a Midwesterner who grew up in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and started skiing at age five. He fell in love with the sport after catching air for the first time and continues to earn top scores with a bevy of freestyle moves and spins in his arsenal.
The 2014 season marked a standout year for Goepper who landed on the podium at nearly every event he entered and culminated with a historic first-ever bronze medal in ski slopestyle at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, where freeskiing made its Olympic debut. Goepper topped off his banner season with his second-straight AFP slopestyle title.
The Winter Expo, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Boyne Mountain's Civic Center also features ski and snowboard gear, tuning demonstrations, a ski swap benefiting the Boyne City ski teams, and giveaways. Outdoors at the popular Skitoberfest revelers can enjoy the best of fall in an Oktoberfest-style setting with an array of entertainment.
The event comes alive with acrobatics, fire breathing performances, and activities galore, including new to the line-up, human bowling and sumo wrestling, from noon to 6 p.m. Michigan beers, wines, spirits, foods and treats are available for tastings and Skitoberfest also offers live street theatre, free scenic chairlift rides, chalk art, and hayrides.
Kids can create works of art while noshing cookies with Cookies & Canvas offering five sessions throughout the afternoon, and delight in plenty of fun in the Kids' Zone including a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, art projects, and more.
Two annual crowd pleasers return with plenty of crashes and splashes during the Pond Pedal at 2 p.m. and tricks galore during the on-snow Rail Jam happening from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Prizes are awarded at both events.
Event goers can join the Pray for Snow Bonfire with s'mores from 5-6 p.m., spectate or participate in a parade from 6-7 p.m., and keep the fun going at the afterparty with the George Brothers Band from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in the Snowflake Lounge
Admission for all events is free; tickets are sold for tastings and select daytime kids' activities. For a complete schedule of events, visit boynemountain.com.
