Planning a Carnival

Category: Events

We sat down with Jessica White, Boyne Mountain Events Planner, to learn how Carnival Weekend is put together. We think you might get a few belly laughs in from her responses, check it out!

Q1: When do you start the planning for Carnival Weekend?

JW: Six months out.

Q2: What is new for Carnival Weekend this year?

JW: Years ago, we offered a Friday night Civic Center party, but it was discontinued due to dwindling attendance.  Last year, we realized early in the night, when the line to the Snowflake Lounge snaked down the stairs and through the lobby, that the demand for a Friday night Civic Center party was back!  This year we invested in an AH-MAZING band, The Waxies from Grand Rapids.  They are an Irish Rock Band similar to Flogging Molly's.  They're super pumped to play their first show at Boyne Mountain.

Q3: How did you find The Shagadelics?

JW: Some of their members also play in the After Party band that performed at Skitoberfest.  They were so great at Skitoberfest and the crowd feedback was through the roof.   Once we saw their hilarious costumed performance on YouTube, we knew they would be perfect!

Q4: How many bands/DJs do you book for the entire weekend?

JW: 11!

Q5: Why do you fence some areas off?

JW: Requirements from the state to preserve our Liquor License.

Q6: How do you manage the mayhem?

JW: We have to up our security levels due to the multitude of parties.  However, last year, our incident level was very low.  On Saturday, we hire Charlevoix County Transit to provide complimentary shuttle service to all residents of Charlevoix county.  If you call them at 231.582.6900, they will pick you up and drop you off right at your house!  The last thing we want is anyone to get in trouble for having too much to drink.

Q7: What is the "can't miss" event of the weekend?

JW: Every party is crazy fun, but I would say the On-Hill party is the can't miss event!  It's what the weekend is famous for!

Q8: Give us your best many beers are sold over Carnival Weekend?

JW: 10,000

Q9: What advice would you give to a first-time Carnival Weekend party-goer?

JW: Pace yourself so you don't miss out on everything going on.  Pick up a Carnival Weekend Party Pass and get it stamped at all of the locations to enter Saturday night's prize drawing.  We have awesome prizes to give away, including BOYNE Gift Cards, Marmot ski jackets, goggles, shot skis, season passes, and more!

Q10: What will we find at the Last Man Standing Bloody Mary Bar on Sunday morning at Stein Eriksen's?

JW: A lot of hungover people with sunglasses on!  Plus, all the comfort brunch dishes and a Bloody Mary bar with all the fixin's...if you can stomach it!

Q11: Our final question...have you ever done the Slush Cup?!

JW: No way, I am too chicken!  My admiration goes to all those who have attempted!

Thank you Jessica!! We hope Jessica's interview got you pumped for Carnival Weekend

We'll see you soon!
