Saving Snow

Boyne Mountain Area Manager, Colin Riviere,

Take A Little, Add a Little

The change of seasons here at Boyne Mountain provides some odd perspectives at times. One foot in winter and one in summer means it's easy for the brain to fully comprehend how much snow it takes to make a ski hill just by looking at the various stages of melt.  We're pushing snow away from areas we need to hurry up and melt and pushing it into piles that we want to last for a little bit longer.   Our on-slope hotel the Edleveiss is getting a new roof here shortly, so we need to clear the 3 ft of snow still drifted into its parking lot. That way contractors can get a jump on construction so its ready for guests in June.  Over in the tube park we're doing the opposite and piling the snow into a giant pile at the bottom so we can create a snow wall for our upcoming Dirty Dog Dash the first Saturday of June. This is our 5k team mud run similar to the Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash events popular around the country.   This year will be the 4th annual running of the triple D at Boyne Mountain and we're moving the race from its Disciples venue to the core of our ski hill. The start finish area this year will be at the base of the Meadows lift/Tubing park with the 5k course traversing back and forth across our hill featuring some 14 different challenges and obstacles. The last of which we're planning to be a snow slide through the finish line. We think we have a good shot at keeping copious amounts of the white stuff clear into June to shape and play with. The way the weather is going we have no worries of it melting away, but should we start getting our normal 70 degree days of sun we'll have to take some measures to preserve it.   So we are also going to tarp the crown of the pile with a white reflective plastic tarp both to keep the suns heat off it and deflect any rain from trickling through the pile.  We think we've made it large enough to start that even 4 weeks of steady melt will keep it around.   Come join us for the Dirty Dog Dash, June 7th to tackle all aspects of our Mountain; mud, snow and water!  It'll be a blast.
