Michigan Fly Fishing Festival

We hooked up with Boyne Outfitters' Director of Operations, Ethan Winchester, and got him to spill his guts about the Michigan Fly Fishing Festival that is lined up for this Saturday, July 12. It's a day, 9am - 6pm, filled with casting clinics, top vendors, speakers, contest, BBQ, and beer. Admission is $10 and free for kids under the age of 16. Here is what to expect at this year's event...

Q1: Who organizes the Michigan Fly Fishing Festival?

Ethan: Yours truly.

Q2: What well-known vendors should people look for?

Ethan: Sage Fly Fishing, Redington, Rio Products, Simms Fishing Products, Temple Fork Outfitters, Willow Classic Reels, Great Lakes Fly Fishing Company, Miller Van Winkle Trout Unlimited and a few more...

Q3: If I have never gone fly fishing, would this be a good place to learn?

Ethan: Absolutely!  We will have representatives from across the fly fishing industry that will be presenting new gear and can answer question for both novice and advanced anglers.  Furthermore, Boyne Outfitters staff will be providing complimentary casting instruction and answering any fly fishing questions guests may have.

Q4: If I am an avid fly fisherman, what will I get out of the Michigan Fly Fishing Festival?

Ethan: A first look at some of the new gear coming out for next season!  Also, answers to questions you have been longing to have answered.  Good company is also a plus!

Q5: How does the Trout Pond Single Fly competition work?

Ethan: Each angler uses a single fly for the duration of one hour.  The angler who has the "most inches of fish" after the hour, wins the competition.

Q6: Can you tell us about the Casting for Conservation competition?

Ethan: Casting for Conservation is organized by Miller Van Winkle Trout Unlimited.  They will organize a casting completion in which each competitor completes tasks with a fly rod.  The entry is $10, and the winner receives a $50 gift card to Boyne Outfitters.  All proceeds go to benefit conservation projects with Miller Van Winkle Trout Unlimited.

Q7: Mmmmmm....we love BBQ from Tannery Creek Meat Market and we love brews from Petoskey Brewing Company. Is that included in the admission cost?

Ethan: Each admission comes with tickets.  Tickets may be used for food and beverage.  Additional tickets may be purchased to enjoy more!

Q8: Who will be speaking and what time will they take the mic?

Ethan: I will be talking about fly fishing the Tip of the Mitt at 11:15am.  At 2:15pm, Glen Blackwood from Great Lakes Fly Fishing Company will be discussing the fundamentals of casting.

Q9: Know any good fishing jokes?

Ethan: What did the fish say when he ran into the wall? ....Dam

Awesome, and thanks Ethan for keeping that joke rated-PG!!
