Taste of Stein Eriksen's

We sat down with Executive Chef, Jeff Minkwic, to get the dish on this season's menu at Stein Eriksen's. This restaurant is located slopeside in the historic Clock Tower Lodge and was the first full-size dining facility at Boyne Mountain Resort. Named after famed Olympic skier and the 1961 Director of Ski School, Stein Eriksen, the restaurant is home to many of Stein's medals, trophies, and his iconic ski sweater. It is also home to some really delicious food!

Q1: What goes into the planning of Stein Eriksen's menu?

JM: Most of the menu has remained the same over the years, people love to come in and order their traditional favorites. We use a simple approach: create delicious food. All of the food is sourced locally (Michigan) with variety, price, and popularity in mind.

Q2: What menu offerings are new this season?

JM: We have the Beef Pasty with Brown Gravy, Cobb Salad, Cheese & Sausage Board with Plath's Meats' sausages, and the Chicken Marsala that are new this season. Plus, we brought back an old favorite with new pots, a Cheese Fondue appetizer and Chocolate Fondue dessert!

Q3: Fondue?! We love fondue, tell us more... ?

JM: This Cheese Fondue is a true European fondue done from a recipe from one of Boyne's own, Roland Andreasson. It has three wonderful Swiss cheeses...Appenzellar, Gruyere, and Emmental, mixed with reisling and served with apples, pears and house baked French bread. On the sweeter side, for dessert, a rich dark chocolate fondue served with strawberries, marshmallows, Rice Krispie treats, pineapple, and baked pretzel bites.

Q4: What kind of atmosphere can people expect while sitting slopeside at Stein Eriksen's ?

JM: A casual atmosphere with a beautiful view of the mountain and the skiers/riders. You can even see the outdoor heated pool, hot tub, and ice skating rink from your table!

Q5: How often is there live entertainment booked?

JM: Every Friday and Saturday from 6-9pm...artists vary, so check the Mountain Messenger! We also have the Family Apres Ski Party every Saturday from 4-6pm with eXperience DJ and fun games. We entertain the kids while mom and dad get a chance to relax with food and drink specials.

Q6: Tell us about your new weekday specials...

JM: Stop in every Wednesday to enjoy a half pound burger with a draft beer for only $10! We also serve our Cheese & Sausage Board with two glasses of house wine for $19 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Take advantage of a great deal on Thursdays that inludes two entrees (Chicken Marsala, Smoked Pork Chop, Beef & Vegetable Stir Fry, or Blackened Chicken Penne Alfredo) with a tossed salad for only $25. Those are smashing midweek deals, so get in here!

Q7: Yum-o! Now tell us..what is your favorite thing on the menu?

JM: The Slopeside Ribeye Steak with Lump Crab and Boursin Cream Sauce...if I had to pick, but the whole menu is great!

Thanks Chef Jeff for your time and for making us salivate during your interview!'s time to go eat!
