Hit the Snow on Fat Tires

We caught up with Boyne Mountain Adventure Center Manager, Greg Mastin, to learn more about Fat Tire Snow Biking. Greg is a dedicated outdoor enthusiast who encourages others to participate in life by finding their own adventure, so he brought Fat Tire Snow Biking to the resort as another fun way to hit the snow. We admire his adventurous spirit and think you will too!

Q1: Would you consider yourself an avid biker?

GM: Yes. I mountain bike and road bike in the summer and fall months and have most recently gotten into fat tire biking.  The attraction to fat tire biking is the pure fun it is to ride in the winter, plus it keeps me active.

Q2: Ok, being that you are an avid biker and love it riding on snow, what are your thoughts on how the average bike riding individual is going to fare on fat tires? It seems like it might be really difficult...

GM: I believe the average bike rider will be surprised at how easy it is to ride on the snow and get hooked on being out on a trail with this low impact activity...especially the non-skiers/boarders.

Q3: Are there specific trails for snow biking?

GM: Yes.  We have a 10 km trail for fat tire snowing biking.  It happens to be the same trail used for snowshoeing, we call it the Adventure Trail.

Q4: We are feeling kinda crazy...are these bikes meant for deep snow and slopes?!

GM: Negative. The bikes are more fun and much safer on packed and groomed trails.  The slopes would be fun, but for your safety and the safety of others, let's stick to the trails.

Q5: How can people try out Fat Tire Snow Biking for the first time?

GM: The Adventure Center will be holding several demos throughout the winter season, including one this Saturday, February 14 from 10am-2pm. You can always just stop into the Adventure Center and tell Seth or Greg that you want to take one of the bikes for a test drive.

Q6: Oh cool, a demo this Saturday from 10am-2pm? What can we expect to see there?

GM: Latitude 45 Bike Shop will be bring six to eight bikes, in addition to our bikes. A demo pump track was designed this week for ease of the guests and will be installed in the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa courtyard. Come check it out, and bring your long johns!

Q7: So rentals are available at the Adventure Center, how big of a group can you accommodate?

GM: At this time we can accommodate up to four riders.  We do not take reservations at the moment.  We are open at 10am daily, seven days a week. Give us a call 231-549-7256.

Q8: Have you ever crashed on a Fat Tire Snow Bike? Be honest...

GM: Yes!   What's funny is...that it felt like being a kid falling into the snow without a care in the world.  I got up, laughed a little, got back on the bike, and rode on down the trail. (And you will too!)

Thanks Greg for your time and spreading your adventurous energy...we are ready to hit the snow on fat tires!
