Once an occasional visitor and now a full-time resident, Northern Michigan captured my attention with its captivating sunsets and held on tight through all four seasons. Granted I would much rather look at a group of trees than a cluster of skyscrapers, where else can you encounter the full color spectrum naturally painted on the trees by Mother Nature? Only to be draped in a blanket of the white fluffy stuff in the winter. But the sunsets... Oh the sunsets are miraculous. Resting on the Northwestern tip of the Eastern time zone with the opportunity to have an uninterrupted view of the horizon to the west. In addition to the natural beauty of our surroundings, the summer is PACKED with awesome events. Without further ado, I figured I would share some of my favorite things with you...
We will be updating our blog prior to each of our summer months. Here's a look at our favorites in June...
The Dirty Dog Dash - Adventure races have taken the world by storm in recent years and for good reasons:
- They are far more fun than a basic road race
- It is socially acceptable to get as dirty as possible when participating
- The race is generally capped off with a delicious brew of your choice!
The Dirty Dog Dash is no exception to these great qualities. In addition to the post-race beer, you also get to kick back and enjoy some live music on what has historically been a beautiful day! There are those who enter the race to go for the win, but we tend to prefer the laughter and company of our friends and a pace that allows us to walk the next day. Check out Boyne Mountain Resort in a different way with the Dirty Dog Dash coming up on June 4.
Total Archery Challenge - Coming to Boyne Mountain Resort June 17 - 19. While we have never hosted this event before, (and I am no archer) this is looking pretty awesome! Competitive hunting (of fake animals) in an enclosed course where you can achieve a score? Certainly makes me want to pick up a bow and give it a go!
Stroll the Streets - The main streets of Boyne City come to life on Friday nights starting June 17. Nearly every corner features a different style of music from our local artists, from blue grass, to rock with everything in-between! And don't forget the little ones! There are also a handful of face painters, balloon twisters, and even magicians! Experience the local vibe at its best, every Friday night.
Sheplers Night Sky Cruise - Being a total sucker for constellations and the lunar cycle, the Shepler's Night Sky Cruises up in Mackinaw are the perfect way to observe the night sky. Enjoy narration from Mary Stewart Adams, Program Director of the Dark Sky Program at the Headlands. Not only will you enjoy the beautiful view of the stars, you will also get to hear the tales and lore associated with the night sky. June 18.
East Jordan Freedom Festival - The Freedom Festival truly is one of the area's favorite summer events. Freedom, family, and friendship are celebrated during the four-day event. The festival kicks off with a Friday night block party featuring food, music, and games for all ages. The weekend continues with a Youth Parade, Grand Parade, Youth Night, Carnival, Craft Show, and a multitude of entertainers and musicians. The festival goes out with a BANG on Saturday night as the sky is lit up by the explosions of fireworks launched from a barge out in the bay of the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. June 21 - June 26.
Put each of these on your calendar and you're sure to feel the same way that we do about this beautiful place that we call home.
Until next time,
