A few of our Favorite Things: July

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now in my second-favorite week of the year: the first week of July. What's not to love? The air is filled almost nightly with fireworks as their various colors reach out across the night sky, adventures remain long as the sun permits, and the Boyne area plays host to more horsepower than one could fathom for a weekend. For those who are about to experience any one or combination of these, prepare to fall in love with northern Michigan in the summertime.

Here are a few things that you will not want to miss in July:

Stroll the Streets - The entire community of Boyne City meets on Main street for some Friday night fun. Nearly every corner features a different style of music from our local artists, from blue grass, to rock with everything in-between! And don't forget the little ones! There are also a handful of face painters, balloon twisters, and even magicians! Experience the local vibe at its best, every Friday night.

Looking for Fireworks? It can be quite a challenge to see all of the fireworks shows that take place in the area when it becomes time to celebrate our Independence Day. Check out some of the best shows around:

  • Bay Harbor | July 3
  • Boyne City | July 4
  • Petoskey | July 4

Boyne Thunder - The power of well over 100,000 horses crammed into over 100 off-shore racing boats gather in Boyne City and Lake Charlevoix to blast off on a 150-mile cruise reaching down to Elk Rapids, and up to Harbor Springs before returning to Boyne City collecting cards along the way. The best poker hand at the end of the day wins the event, and the proceeds go to charity! Not only do these vessels have monster motors, they also have massive sound systems that will be put on display the night before the race in Veterans Park in downtown Boyne City. Check out the 2016 Boyne Thunder schedule of events.

Venetian Festival - Combining the greatness of Boyne Thunder and our northern love for fireworks with the essence of Charlevoix provides the annual Venetian Festival in Charlevoix, MI. Well the boats in this event aren't (all) built for speed, but they tend to be just as flashy during the yearly Boat Parade. Including a carnival with fun for all ages. The party lasts all week long and would be an excellent day trip during your visit up our way!

Tournament of Champions - Make way for the big dogs! We welcome some of the greatest players in the state for our 25th annual competition spread across The Alpine and The Monument playing 54 total holes of golf over the course of two days. Can anybody top our reigning champion, Barrett Kelpin?

Want to know what else is so awesome about July? While I wish we could still be skiing, throw a leg over a mountain bike and descend one of our trails from the summit. Got some extra energy? Hop back on the trails and climb your way to the summit.; or just ride back to the Hemlock chairlift and catch a ride to the top. How many adventures can you handle in one day? Step into the Adventure Center and make the most of your day, or kick back and put your feet up by the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa pool or GiGi's Tiki Hut on Deer Lake. So many possibilities!

Until next time,
