11 Facts About the Tournament of Champions

Category: Events Golf Resort

When you talk with someone who's experienced golf at Boyne Mountain Resort, you might think they're exaggerating. But once you've experienced the 36 holes of spectacular golf that make up The Alpine and The Monument courses, you'll sound exactly the same. This place is special, and the Tournament of Champions is no different. The Tournament, now in its 26th year, is a unique experience that brings a fun challenge to the game we love so much. It's just around the corner - with 116 players teeing off July 31 - so to prepare, here are 11 facts about the Tournament of Champions:

  1. The Tournament is unique because it pits men, women, juniors, seniors, professionals AND amateurs against each other to compete from three sets of tees.
  2. Each player who competes in The Tournament has won a major Michigan golf tournament.
  3. Korey Mahoney from Manton, Michigan won last year's Tournament with an impressive total score of 204 for the three rounds.
  4. The winner of The Tournament takes home a grand prize of $8,000!
  5. The Tournament is preceded by the Tournament of Champions Pro Am, which this year, will host 100 participants. Many pros will be grouped with amateurs in a warm up five-person scramble starting this Thursday.
  6. To date, no amateur or junior has ever won The Tournament, despite many very talented amateurs and juniors coming close to making history. This year could be the year that changes!
  7. Both Jeff Roth and Michael Harris have won The Tournament five times in the 26 years it has taken place.
  8. The first round and third round are played on The Alpine course while round two is played on The Monument. Both courses are in excellent shape this summer.
  9. Stacy Snider is the only woman ever to have won The Tournament to date. She took home first place in 2003.
  10. This year's field includes 15 members of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, and 8 past winners of the Tournament of Champions playing in this year's tournament.
  11. In the event of a tie, first place is decided by a sudden death playoff immediately following the final round.
