BOYNE Golf Professionals Raise $30,000 for Local Charities

BOYNE Golf professionals proudly presented two checks totaling $30,000 to local charities.  The Manna Food Project accepted a check for $20,000 and The First Tee of Northern Michigan received $10,000.  The donations were the result of nearly a year's worth of fundraising leading up to and following the annual Harbor Cup golf tournament held in September, which pits twelve of BOYNE's golf professionals against area golf professionals in a 54-hole Ryder Cup-style event.

In addition to the Harbor Cup's golf rivalry, there's an equally important commitment to fundraising with each team selecting community organizations and raising money for charity.  Since its inception, Harbor Cup has contributed more than $240,000 to beneficiaries.  This year, Team BOYNE raised the largest donation in Harbor Cup's 18-year history.

"Each year is a herculean effort on behalf of our team, and it couldn't be done without support from our golf members, resort owners, family, and friends," said Josh Richter, Team BOYNE's 2014 Harbor Cup captain and head golf professional of the Ross Golf Center at Boyne Highlands.  "Each year, we work toward the goal of raising a record donation and we couldn't be prouder to be donating $30,000."

For The Manna Food Project, a pantry and warehouse that supplies food to more than 35 pantries and agencies in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties, the $20,000 donation provides 129,000 meals to community members in need.

"The holidays prove to be a difficult time for many of our families, and we see an increase in numbers at the Manna Pantry as well as our other agencies," said Deb Noblett, executive director of The Manna Food Project. "We are so thankful to the BOYNE Golf professionals for their generous donation to Manna to help families in our area."

At The First Tee of Northern Michigan, an organization that promotes character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf, the $10,000 donation helps to reach even more youth with expanded programming.

"This year's Harbor Cup funds will help us with our continued expansion efforts to reach even more youth throughout Northern Michigan," said Shauna Bezilla, executive director of The First Tee of Northern Michigan.  "The funds will help cover coaches and staff as well as additional golf equipment, training aids, and materials.

Bezilla adds, "The First Tee of Northern Michigan has been so fortunate to partner with BOYNE Golf professionals.  Not only does this group give of their time to assist us with volunteer efforts, they are passionate about growing the game of golf and believe in and support the mission of The First Tee."

"The First Tee of Northern Michigan has come such a long way from our first year of offering programs at Boyne Highlands reaching just 250 total youth to now reaching over 3,000 youth each year.  We have expanded the delivery of our programs to include five green grass golf locations, over 10 elementary school programs, and partnerships with the Harborage and other youth serving organizations.  In addition, we partner with agencies to offer programs that assist at-risk youth with life skills including managing emotions and setting goals.  Support from events like Harbor Cup and many others have created a program that is making a difference with youth in Northern Michigan."

Team BOYNE 2014 Harbor Cup players include Captain, Josh Richter, Associate Captain, Ryan Brown, Mike Chumbler, Bernie Friedrich, Steve Good, Brian O'Neill, Casey Powers, Barry Redmond, Jerry Roman, Kyle Roman, Dave Trudell, Dan Turcott, Zach Zondlo and first alternate, Mike Fay.
